United Home Insurance Unearned Premium Q&A

Q: I am due a refund of the premium I paid on my United Home Insurance policy. Is the Tennessee Insurance Guaranty Association (TIGA) responsible for paying that refund?

A: If you paid a premium to United Home Insurance Company, and your policy terminated before the policy term you paid for ended, you may have a claim for unearned premium (UEP) with TIGA, if your claim meets TIGA’s statutory requirements. You will also have to provide TIGA with a proper Proof of Claim (POC) form, and any accompanying documentation needed to substantiate your claim. These forms will be mailed to you by TIGA.

Q: How do I know if my claim meets TIGA’s statutory requirements?

A: To be eligible to file a claim with TIGA for unearned premium (UEP), your United Home Insurance Company policy must have been in force on or after the effective date of insolvency, which in this case is November 16, 2023; your policy records must show premium paid, but not earned (UEP); and, the amount of unearned premium must exceed TIGA’s mandatory statutory deductible of $250 for UEP claims.

Q: Why does TIGA apply a deductible to my claim?

A: Tennessee state law requires that for a valid UEP claim to be eligible for payment, the unearned premium due must exceed $250, and the claim must be less than $10,000. Statutory requirements for UEP payments are found in section 56-12-120 of the Tennessee Code.

Q: My United Home Insurance Company policy was cancelled prior to November 16, 2023, and I am due a refund. What do I do?

A: If your policy is cancelled prior to the insolvency effective date, and you believe you are due a premium refund, then you may have a claim with the liquidator of United Home Insurance Company.  For information on how you can pursue that claim, call (501) 371-2776.

Q: My policy cancelled on or after November 16, 2023, but my unearned premium amount does not exceed $250. What do I do?

A: If your policy cancelled on or after the insolvency effective date of November 16, 2023, but the amount of unearned premium due you did not exceed $250, you may have a claim with the liquidator of United Home Insurance Company for the amount you believe you are due. For information on how you can pursue that claim, call (501) 371-2776.

Q: My policy cancelled on or after November 16, 2023, and my unearned premium exceeds $250, but I want to pursue a claim for the $250 deductible. What do I do?

A: If your policy cancelled on or after the insolvency effective date of November 16, 2023, and you want to pursue a claim for the $250 mandatory deductible applied to your policy, you may contact the liquidator of United Home Insurance Company for the amount you believe you are due. For information on how you can pursue that claim, call (501) 371-2776.

Q: My policy cancelled on or after November 16, 2023, and my unearned premium exceeds $250.  What do I do to receive my payment?

A: TIGA is still receiving and processing records for United Home Insurance Company’s former policyholders and claimants. If our records indicate that you may be due a UEP claim payment from TIGA, we will send you a Proof of Claim (POC) form with instructions on how to pursue your claim.

Q: My policy cancelled on or after November 16, 2023, but I do not know if my claim exceeds $250. How do I find out?

A: TIGA is still receiving and processing records for United Home Insurance Company’s former policyholders and claimants. If our records indicate that your claim did not exceed the $250 statutory deductible, we will contact you in writing at your last known mailing address to inform you.

Q: I do not know the specific date when my United Home Insurance Company policy was cancelled. How can I find out?

A: Your agent should be able to tell you when your policy was cancelled.

Q: I do not find my question or answer here. Who do I contact?

A: If you have a question not answered on our website or that cannot be answered by your agent, you may email TIGA at questions@tiga.net and provide your question, policy information and contact information.  A representative will get back to you.
